Scoliosis is a curvature of the spine. Instead of running in a straight line down the middle of the back, the spine curves to one side or the other. The curvature may be prominent or nearly unnoticeable. It typically presents in childhood and may clear up or worsen with time. Sometimes there's a reason for scoliosis; other times the cause is idiopathic, or unknown. Dr. Jeff Jenkins of Jenkins Chiropractic in San Jose, California has the answers to your questions on scoliosis.

Scoliosis Q & A

What causes scoliosis?

You can't prevent scoliosis. It isn't caused by poor posture or by toting heavy backpacks from classroom to classroom. Sports injuries don't cause scoliosis. Scoliosis cases with known causes may be attributed to genetics, congenital disabilities or disabilities such as cerebral palsy. It can even be caused by one leg being longer than the other. Sometimes scoliosis will clear up if the cause is addressed. Appendicitis, for instance, can contribute to scoliosis, but once treated, the condition typically rights itself.

What most parents don't want to hear is that sometimes it's best to "wait and see" how the condition progresses as the child ages. Most parents of children who have scoliosis want immediate treatment to help improve their child's chances of having a lesser curvature. This is where chiropractic science may be able to help. While Dr. Jenkins may not be able to correct the curvature of the spine directly, he can help in other ways.

What is the standard scoliosis treatment?

The jury is still out on how impactful chiropractic science is on scoliosis, but when Dr. Jenkins treats a patient using chiropractic medicine in conjunction with other rehabilitative options, results are promising. The chiropractic factor works to relieve pain and to increase mobility but typically doesn't help straighten out the curvature. For this to happen, Dr. Jenkins must utilize Corrective Movement Rehabilitative Therapy. Specially trained physical therapists usually perform this treatment.

If you suffer from scoliosis, Dr. Jenkins can help devise a treatment plan that will work for both the pain of the condition and on strengthening the muscles of the back. We have physical therapists on staff who are trained in corrective movement, and we'll work hard to help you improve your curvature and mobility.
